The Spartan Sprints

Spartan Sprints are two-hour gatherings sponsored by the Adventure Radio Society, held the first Monday of every month.

The Spartan Sprints have a unique, three-faceted focus. They encourage outdoor operation with back country radio gear (if outdoor operation isn't practical, home-based operation is fine). They gather fascinating information about the upper atmosphere, documenting how low power signals can travel long distancs. And they encourage the growth of a like-minded community of amateur radio operator who generously share their knowedge and experiences.

Which Bands

The bands will be 80 meters, 40 meters, 20 meters, 15 meters and 10 meters. You may operate any number of bands—your choice. Many Spartan Sprint operators gravitate to the QRP CW calling frequencies on these bands.

Equipment and Antennas

Spartan Sprinters use 5 Watts or less. We encourage you to experiment with 1 Watt or less. You will be surprised at how effective these low levels can be, and how much fun QRPp really is. Similarly, we encourage you to experiment with simple wire antennas. And we encourage sprinters to use equpment they built from "scratch," that is equipment built from schematics.

Exchange

Exchange RST, SPC (state, province or country) and power output. If you choose to call CQ, use the format "CQ SP," or "CQ QRP TEST." Give yourself one point for each contact. You can give yourself credit for working the same station on a second, third, or fourth band.

Dick N4HAY:Tough conditions! Most stations were extremely weak. I got the impression that they could hear me better than I could hear them. Need to look at my K2 sensitivity I guess. I operated on 40m only
sslyon:Couldn't join NVQS this yr and had to stick close to home. Glad I did! WX was horrible with gale winds blowing sleet/snow, etc. Worked in comfort in unheated "spare room" @ 60F : ). Band condx were as bad as I've experienced, due to lethal tornado swarms in the south. S-8/9 QRN, QSB... real grunt stuff. Worked for total of 52 Q's and 33 S/P/C. Could have claimed EA8IE, but he was QRO : ) Q's/SPC's by band 80=14/10; 40=13/9; 20=25/14; 15=1/1." 15m was a real struggle. Heard only two stns, with KK6MC the only Q. What a kick to work Paul, W0RW/pm, @ 14, 110' on Pikes Peak on 20m! Thanks to all for the patience to endure many "agn?" and ear-splitting noise, and again to ARS for hosting this wing-ding. Now ..... let's straighten out this Wiki thing!!
Jim Larsen - AL7FS:Well, that was a tough experience here from the QTH of KØJGL in Atlantic, IA. I managed to work 4 QSOs...ME, GA, WA, WI. It was nice to work AA1MY in ME on 80 meters. Listen to AL7FS whine: I heard no stations on 20 meters. I had S8.5-S9 solid buzzing on 40 meters but still managed the 3 QSOs. Then it kicked up to S9+10. 80 meters was audio hash with peaks at a consistent S9+10. I used a borrowed straight key and a Kenwood TS-120S with no CW filter. I just had to give up after 45 minutes of ear damaging noise. For all that, I had fun. I can tell that by my standards you folks have wonderful propagation down here. I am jealous. Best wishes to all of you. 73, Jim, AL7FS Atlantic, Ia (I have no idea why it says I am a Nebraska Contributor)
