Anonymous:40 meters was completely dead here in the desert. Didn't hear one station.
Larry Wilson:Hello everyone from the corn fields of eastern Iowa! I just read the postings from Mike and John and enjoyed reading their experiences. I sure wish I could have heard Mike with his K1/PM operation from CA but no stations were heard west of the Missouri river the night of the contest. The operation here was from my little ATS-3 to a random end-fed wire thrown over a tree in the back yard. Strong thunder storms east of here wiped out 80M almost totally and 80 was the only band open anywhere after about 8:45 CST, so very low score as a result. Six stations worked on 40M and only K4LTA on 80M for a big score of seven! Say, this wiki is fun after all! I had quite a time getting started but managed to feel my way through the fog. So if an old frog like me can do it, more postings should follow next month! Thanks to all who participated! Hope to see you all next month. 72's and 73's Larry, KF0N
John T. Laney III:FT1000MP, 5 watts output, home QTH with TH6DXX, zepp, dipole and inverted vee. January SP started off pretty good with 7 QSOs in 10 minutes on 20 meters. Band was open from New England out to Minnesota and as close is as Indiana. After the first 10 minutes, I heard no sprinters on 20M, but the band remained open for some time. 40M was very poor here. I did work as close in as NS2X in TN and as far out as LA, IA, MN, WI, PA, and NJ. Couldn't raise K4LTA on 40, but did work Bill and also W2LJ on 80. Those were the only two stations heard on 80. I didn't hear any of the west coast stations mentioned by N9OHW/6. One intersting contact during the Sprint, which was also during the LSU-Ohio State football match was with K5LSU, which is a club station for LSU. After 25 minutes of calling CQs on 80 and 40 with no answers and of hearing no new stations to call, I gave up about 0330. This is the first time that I haven't stuck it out to the end since I started doing SP sprints in 2005. Hope there will be more activity and interest, as well as better propagation next month. Don't forget to try 20 at the beginning and to go to 80 when 40 begans to become unproductive. 80M was noisy last night, but if W2LJ and I could work each other, a lot more QSOs would have been possible if the activity had been there. 20M: 7. 40M: 13. 80M: 2. Total: 22 QSOs in 90 minutes. Thanks for the QSOs. Especially to W2LJ for three bands! Hope to work many more next month. 73/72, John, K4BAI.
